Job Searching While Building a Business: Why I’m Doing Both

For the past several months, I’ve been walking two paths at once: I’m actively searching for a full-time role while also building a new company from the ground up.
Job searching while building a business isn’t easy, but treating each path with structure and consistency helps me stay focused and make measurable progress.
I approach both goals with the same dedication I would bring to any full-time role. Here's what a typical day looks like for me right now.
A Day in the Life: Job Searching While Building a Business
6:00 AM - I’m up, dressed, and ready to go. Just like I would be if I were heading into the office.
7:00 - 9:00 AM - This is job search mode. I research roles, tailor resumes, and submit applications.
9:00 - 9:15 AM - A quick coffee break. Same as I’d take in a structured workday.
9:15 AM - 12:00 PM - This is build time. Coding, UI improvements, or expanding our social presence.
12:00 - 1:00 PM - Lunch. Stepping away matters.
1:00 - 3:00 PM - Content, strategy, or client research. Shift gears to keep momentum.
3:00 - 5:00 PM - Calls, professional development, and continuous learning.
5:00 PM - I shut it down. I reflect. Then I get ready to do it again tomorrow.
Fridays are reserved for overflow, rest, or client meetings. If Friday becomes a full workday, I take Monday off to maintain focus and long-term productivity.
Why I Work 10-Hour Days Over 4 Days
I follow a 10-hour, 4-day workweek. Not because I want more free time (though I enjoy long weekends), but because the research supports it.
Studies from Microsoft Japan and pilot programs in the U.S. and UK have shown that four-day workweeks lead to higher productivity, better work-life balance, and greater focus.
Here’s why it works for me:
It encourages me to block distractions and focus deeply.
It forces better prioritization with less time for busywork.
It gives me space to recharge and return on Monday, ready to execute.
It’s flexible. If Friday becomes a full client day, I shift my rest day to Monday.
This isn’t about working less. It’s about working smarter and delivering better results. It’s a model worth considering, especially if you’re job searching while building a business.
